Green Spaces:
There are no formal parks right in Georgestown, but the GNA is interested in preserving green spaces in the neighbourhood for public use. The association has promoted a variety of projects, including the protection of Davey's Field, planting gardens on city land, as well as the preservation of the urban forest and other natural features within the area (i.e. the Wisdom Tree) Corner of Belvedere St & Circular Rd c.1943
Neighbourhood Improvement Plan:
In 1977, the architectural and engineering firm of Sheppard/Burt/Pratt was hired to undertake a comprehensive study of our neighbourhood for the original Georgestown Neighbourhood Improvement Association and the City of St. John's. This was funded by the Government of Canada's nation-wide "Neighbourhood Improvement Program" which had the following objective: "To conserve and improve older run-down neighbourhoods and to encourage development of higher quality community environments." The resulting 114-page "Conceptual Plan" is a ground-breaking report that recommended major improvements to the neighbourhood. The report can be credited for bringing about several upgrades to Georgestown. Because of cost, many of the innovative recommendations have yet to be acted upon. The report remains an important work of urban geography that continues to inspire the GNA today.
Planning for the Future:
After several years of requesting that the City of St. John's undertake a sub-area plan for Georgestown, City Council finally passed a motion in early 2008 to begin the process. A steering committee of city councillors, planning staff and five GNA Board members was struck. This committee has met several times and is now in the process of collecting baseline information. In the first part of 2009, public consultations will be held to determine further steps.
