TOTAL FOR OUR FIRST YEAR: 2499 batteries diverted from our local landfill !!!
Remember: you can now dispose of your household batteries in Georgestown the environmentally friendly way (but please, no wet, damaged, or oozing batteries). Drop them off at the Georgetown Convenience Store (Fleming St) or Capitol Video (Military Rd at Rawlins Cross). Look for the white container marked "Dead Battery Drop Off". From there, the Georgestown Neighbourhood Association will safely dispose of the batteries at the new Household Hazardous Wastes Facility at Robin Hood Bay.
Whether it's AA, AAA, C, D, telephone batteries, watch batteries, or anything in between, proper battery disposal is important. Batteries contain environmentally harmful substances such as mercury, lead, nickel, cadmium, and other metals. When introduced into landfills, these substances can leak slowly into the surrounding land and groundwater. The best way to dispose of batteries is to find somewhere that will recycle them.
