We invite you to join us! The GNA sponsors, hosts and organizes a variety of projects and events. There are many ways you can make a difference in your community! Listed below are some of our recurring events.
Conversations on Community
These are a series of informal monthly discussions on various aspects of community. Their main aim is to discuss how we can develop a sense of community in Georgestown, but most of them are general enough to be of interest to people who live outside the neighbourhood. Each Conversation is on a specific theme and is led by a facilitator with some relevant expertise. Examples of topics are: What is community? How can those on low incomes be integrated? What is an age-friendly city? How can gardens improve food security? The role of youth; literacy and the community; affordable housing. They are held in different locations across the neighbourhood, depending on the topic, e.g., Georgestown Pub, Hungry Heart Cafe, The Lantern, The Gathering Place. All are welcome to participate. To suggest a new topic, or for information on the series, contact georgestownneighbourhood@gmail.com
Easter Egg Hunt
The GNA along with neighbours put on an Easter Egg Hunt in Georgestown. Children are invited to hunt for eggs that contain prizes redeemable at local merchants. The event gets people outside and reacquainted during the longer hibernation that is our winter. You can contribute by getting a business to donate a prize, or help the Easter Bunny hide eggs in on the day of the event.
Spring/Fall Cleanup
When the snow is (hopefully) gone in the late spring, all sorts of buried treasures appear on the neighbourhood landscape. People are needed to help our garbage patrol as we pick-up all sorts of junk on a Saturday in May or June. A truck hauls off all the garbage that day. People who participate always say it is a fun social event. This is a great way to get your neighborhood ready for summer! We do the same thing in the fall.
Neighborhood Flea Market
In July or August we open up our neighbourhood to bargain hunters from all over the city. The sale has garnered the reputation as being one of the best in St. John's. Residents are invited to either set up tables in front of their homes or donate their items to the GNA that can be put on sale. Volunteers are usually needed to help with the clean-up. Residents are invited to a bbq in the evening. This video from the 2008 sale was produced by Sydney Blackmore for The Scope.
Skating Party
Looking for something to do between the egg nog and the champagne? The GNA Skating Party is a great way to stretch your legs and get out of the house. The party is usually held around Christmas and open to everyone in the neighbourhood. The admission fee is small and we use the opportunity to collect non-perishable food items for the food bank which experiences its busiest time. Warm up afterwards with some hot chocolate and treats.
